Launch of Monthly Newsletter by Zaheer Science Foundation on “Science & Society in Media” as part of the IDL 2023 Celebrations.

Zaheer Science Foundation (ZSF) is a non-profit organization, which was established in 1970 as a Think Tank to help in nation-building with the promotion of scientific research and educational reform. The Foundation has been organising international workshops, scientists’ conclaves and training programmes in collaboration with UNESCO on themes related to Science, Technology and Innovation Policy, Science diplomacy and training programmes for working professionals and students. Recently, ZSF has taken the initiative to launch a monthly newsletter on Science & Society in Media. In its publications, ZSF will be highlighting a spectrum of S&T information to the common man.

It is to mention here that India's scientific institutions and laboratories have played a stellar role in independent India's scientific progress. S&T's achievements are aligned with social upliftment. Various mass media play a vital role in disseminating S&T knowledge to different sections of society. This process inculcates a scientific temper among the general public. Both at the institutional and individual levels, various endeavours have been made so far. The “Science & Society in Media” Newsletter is an initiative towards this noble cause.

Background Note

The UN's proclamation of 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ) recognizes quantum physics' pivotal role in modern innovation. This celebration marks 100 years of groundbreaking discoveries with transformative potential across multiple sectors. Quantum advancements are driving progress in secure communications, medical diagnostics, and materials engineering while supporting the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

India has strategically elevated Quantum Technology to a National Mission status, aligning with global initiatives to leverage these innovations responsibly. The focus remains on inclusive development and equitable access to emerging technologies.

This workshop will introduce quantum principles to non-specialists, covering both theoretical foundations and real-world implementations across computing, energy, and manufacturing sectors. Discussions will address ethical implications and workforce training requirements in this fast-evolving field.

This initiative seeks to cultivate public awareness and inspire future researchers to guide quantum technology's ethical deployment for maximum societal benefit. By bridging knowledge gaps, we aim to prepare stakeholders for the quantum revolution while ensuring its benefits reach all communities.
