Dr Swarna V Kanth is the Chief Scientist of CSIR-CLRI and is contributing towards sustainable and green technologies, and has pioneered in establishing biodegradable leather products. She has 80 international research publications, 150 Indian and international conference research papers and patents to her credit. She developed leather and its products clusters at the national and international levels. She is an expert in devising novel education, training, and skill development models to achieve inclusive growth for a sustainable leather and footwear sector, as well as green growth for workers, entrepreneurs, and governments worldwide. She has a strong expertise in the creation of an international skill ecosystem for the leather sector of the respective countries, which has benefited participants from over 27 countries. She is the recipient of various awards including the “Research Excellence Award” and the “Skill Development Leadership Award” in 2017 given by the Indus Foundation, India, “Award for Excellence in Leather Processing” in 2019 presented at the 1st Industry Leadership Awards organized by the Venus International Foundation, Chennai, Top Ten Scientists Award (2009-2010) given by CSIR-CLRI and Mecca Haji Abdul Majid Sahib Endowment Awards in 1998,1999 and 2007 (for Best Project Work guided by her).
